Birth Care

A birth doulas main and primary goal is to ensure that you have continued support that is uniquely yours during your labour and birth, and the immediate postpartum.

Role of a Birth Doula

Birth doulas are experienced in childbirth and on assisting the birthers needs. A doulas goal is to provide a level of emotional and physical support that can often be overlooked during the labour process. We work on listening to not only your verbal queues, but also the physical ones. We also work towards making sure you are as informed as possible when making decisions and encourage you to ask questions from your care providers and to stay true to yourself.

Before we dive into the exciting part, we have to get to know each other. A good doula will go out of their way to not just listen to your wishes, but understand them as they are a part of you. Our goal is to be true to you and to help you to advocate for yourself. As we get to know each other we will be able to provide you with information on some childbirth education, breastfeeding, labouring positions, and breathing techniques. We will also suggest to you referrals of other professions who we think may benefit you ie: massage therapist, chiropractor, pelvic floor therapist, and more. We will work together to figure out your pain management goals from the early contractions of labour to the peak of it. During labour we will provide support as you need it. Whether that be a quiet friend in the corner, providing massage, fetching ice, starting the shower, or holding your hand.

My goal as your doula is to listen to what you need in each moment and to make sure I fill that space fully.

Birth doulas are not a medical support but we can work on bridging the gap between your medical team and your experience by caring for your non-medical needs.

Partners and Doula

One of the biggest concerns many partners have while considering a doula is how it will affect their role in the labour and birth experience. As a birth doula, our goal is not to replace your partner in any capacity. Your partner is your other half and they know your most intimate self. Their role in your labour and birth should never be overshadowed. The memories that you will make will be yours to cherish forever.

As a doula our main interest is of course with the birther and the baby, but it encompasses so much more. The interest of the partner, or family, involved is just as important to consider as they can often be left aside in medical decision making and settings. In the event of a labour that requires more extensive medical support, we can sit and chat with your partner so that they are not alone in those moments.

Often partners will find they can relax and enjoy the experience more with a doula present, as they are able to participate at their own discretion and know that the birther is being cared for continually.
